Pembatalan EJU Tahap 1 2020

Attention: Applicants for the 2020 EJU (1st Session) [outside Japan]

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)

<Important Notice>

Decision to Cancel First Session of the 2020 Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)

As previously reported, the 2020 EJU (1st Session) was scheduled to be held on this coming June 21 (Sunday), with preparations steadily advanced with that timetable in mind. To our utmost regret, however, these plans have been severely disrupted by the global spread of the new coronavirus infection (Covid-19).

Domestically in Japan, the Covid-19 crisis has created major complications in securing physical locations to conduct the EJU, as well as in effectively preventing the risk of infection to those reporting to take the examination. The current situation therefore renders it extremely difficult to offer the EJU in the normal format.

The conditions are much the same outside of Japan. Numerous national governments have announced curfews on citizens going outside their homes, restrictions on specific activities, directives to close down examination sites and other emergency orders.

 Following meticulous considerations of these and other related developments, those of us at the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) have reached the painful conclusion to cancel the EJU scheduled for June 21 (Sunday). To those of you who have devoted vast time and effort in preparing to take this examination, we can only offer our heartfelt apologies for this outcome, and the great disappointment and inconvenience that it will cause.

To all EJU applicants, please rest assured that we naturally plan to refund the examination fees that have been paid in advance. Our EJU overseas representatives will be contacting you soon with regard to the specific methods to be used for these repayments. We request your further patience as we prepare these communications.

Next, please note the following procedures to be adopted by JASSO with regard to universities and other institutions of higher education originally scheduled to use the results of the 2020 EJU (1st Session) in their own international student entrance examinations.

We are requesting that special considerations be shown for the interests of international students in the entrance examinations and other admissions measures conducted by each school. For the EJU, we are suggesting that use be made of the results of the EJU given in (or prior to) November 2019, or the 2020 EJU (2nd Session) scheduled for this November.

Universities and other institutions of higher education may choose to offer their own independent entrance exams or engage in other screening processes. As such, we are likewise asking all schools to devote keen attention to the situations of international students in these cases as well.

As described, the treatment of entrance examinations with cancellation of the EJU scheduled for this June is expected to differ by each school. Accordingly, we ask that you directly contact the university or other institution to which you are applying to learn the specific details to be adopted.

Thank you again for your understanding and consideration during these trying times.
